Friday Random 10: Old and New Favorites Edition
Fri Jul 25, 2008 at 10:47:33 AM PDT
Welcome to the Friday Random 10, StreetProphet's weekly music discussion group. Grab a beverage of your choice from today's Happy Hour thread, pull up a comfy chair, and start thumbing through the records, 8-tracks, tapes, CD's and mp3's lying around. If you're not into music, here's some noise-canceling earplugs- they'll filter out the music while you stay and chat with us about other stuff :-).
So I've been wondering off and on for the last two months about what to do for this, my first ever Friday Random 10. Finally, I was inspired by Sister Quarterstaff's excellent Random 10 from last week (which I failed to reply to ><). The difference is that, instead of turning 30, I work for a college radio station. Listening to extremely new music, and becoming familiar with a bunch of different bands and genres, is part of my job. It's inevitable that I start to really like some of the artists I hear about, and interestingly enough, I've found that the more I learn, the more I appreciate some of the artists I've been listening to my whole life.</p>
So the ten for today are:
- 5 songs by musicians you love who are new to you ("new" can be anywhere from this month to a couple of years back, depending on how quickly you pick up music).
- 5 songs by musicians you love whom you've been listening to as long as you can remember.
Some new favorites of mine, from the last 6 months...
"Plus Ones," Okkervil River, The Stage Names - the song is a must-listen for music nerds. :)
"Journey of the Featherless," Cloud Cult, Feel Good Ghosts (Teapartying Through Tornadoes). - Their music is equal parts silly and creepy, with this song falling more on the silly side.
"One More Night (Your Ex-lover Remains Dead)," Stars, Set Yourself on Fire.
"Sinnerman," Nina Simone, I have it on Verve's Compact Jazz - I'm deeply ashamed I hadn't heard of her; the song was used at the end of The Thomas Crown Affair.
"The Drive," The Animators, Home By Now. - Now defunct, but you can download their entire catalog for free here.
... And some old favorites...
"I Wish I Was a Girl," Counting Crows, This Desert Life. - avoid the hideous Violet Delight song of the same name.
"Amsterdam" Guster, Keep It Together. - A friend of mine introduced me to Guster and Dispatch on a trip to Charleston years ago.
"The Boy In The Bubble," Paul Simon, Graceland. - heard it on family road trips, along with everything else the man has written.
"The General," Dispatch, Bang Bang.
"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," The Beatles, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. - Another song played consistently on family road trips.
... And one extra that's both: "Never Die Young," Luciana Souza and James Taylor, The New Bossa Nova. James Taylor was another staple of family road trips, Luciana Souza is an excellent singer I just heard about on NPR, and this is a duet of the two.
Thanks, Sister Q., for the inspiration (subject and formatting!), and my apologies if this is too similar to a recent Random 10 - I couldn't find any others on the website.
